How to convert M4A to MP3 online for free
- Open this pageNo registration, email address or app download is needed.
- Drop in your M4A filesAdd as many files as you want — there is no daily or per-file quota.
- ConvertChoose a bitrate and press “Convert to MP3”. Processing happens locally, so it starts immediately without waiting for an upload.
- DownloadSave the MP3 files individually or as one ZIP. They are clean files with no watermark or added audio.
What “free” means here
A lot of converters advertise themselves as free, then limit you to two files a day, cap uploads at 50 MB, add a voice watermark to the result, or ask for your email before the download link appears. We don’t do any of that. Every feature on this site — batch conversion, 320 kbps output, ZIP downloads — is available to everyone, every time, without an account.
We can afford to offer the converter for free because it costs us almost nothing to run: your device does the heavy lifting, so there are no expensive conversion servers. The site is supported by a small number of clearly labelled ads, never by selling data.
Why “no upload” matters
Traditional online converters work by sending your file to their server. That has real downsides:
- Privacy: voice memos, interviews, meetings and family recordings are personal. Once uploaded, you have to trust how long the service keeps them and who can access them.
- Speed: uploading a 50 MB file on a typical mobile connection can take longer than the conversion itself, and you then have to download the result again.
- Reliability: uploads fail on flaky Wi-Fi, servers get overloaded and queues form at busy times.
With in-browser conversion the file is read directly from your disk into the page’s memory, converted, and handed back to you. It never crosses the network. That is also why there is no meaningful file-size limit: we are not paying for your bandwidth or storage.
How to check that nothing is uploaded
You don’t have to take our word for it. Here are two simple tests anyone can do:
- The offline test. Load this page, then switch your device to airplane mode (or unplug the network). Add an M4A file and convert it. It still works, because nothing needs to be sent anywhere.
- The network inspector test. On a computer, press F12 (or Cmd+Option+I on a Mac), open the Network tab, then convert a file. You will see no request carrying your audio data.
The only time the converter may download something is when it needs the optional ffmpeg engine for an unusual file; that is a one-way download of program code, never an upload of your audio.
Staying safe with free online converters
If you use other free audio converters, a few habits will keep you safe. Avoid sites that insist on installing a browser extension or a “download manager” — legitimate converters don’t need one. Be wary of pages with fake “Download” buttons that are really ads; on our site the only download button is the one attached to your converted file. Never enter passwords or payment details for a “free” conversion. And for sensitive recordings, prefer tools that process files locally, like this one.
Free conversions for other formats too
The same free, private engine powers converters for other common formats: WAV to MP3 for large uncompressed recordings, FLAC to MP3 for lossless music, MP4 to MP3 to extract audio from videos, AAC to MP3 and OGG to MP3. Going the other way, MP3 to M4A creates AAC files that suit iPhone ringtones and Apple devices. Want to understand the trade-offs? Our lossy vs lossless guide explains what you keep and lose with each.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a limit to how many files I can convert for free?
No. There are no daily quotas, file counts or size caps beyond what your own device can handle.
Do I need to create an account?
No. There is no sign-up, login or email address required at any point.
Will the MP3 have a watermark?
No. The output is a clean MP3 containing only your audio.
Is it safe to use?
Yes. The site does not install anything and your files never leave your device. The only third-party content is advertising, which is clearly labelled.
Does it work without an internet connection?
After the page has loaded, standard M4A files convert offline. Rare formats that need the ffmpeg engine require it to be downloaded once first.
