What is an OGG file?
OGG is an open, patent-free container format maintained by the Xiph.Org Foundation — the same people behind FLAC. An .ogg file can carry different codecs: most commonly Vorbis, a general-purpose music codec that has been widely used in video games, Wikipedia audio and streaming, and increasingly Opus, a newer codec that excels at both speech and music at low bitrates. Opus is what powers voice in WhatsApp, Discord, Telegram, WebRTC calls and many browsers’ recording features. Files ending in .opus or .oga are the same family.
Why convert OGG to MP3?
OGG’s openness is great, but support outside browsers and Android is patchy. iPhones historically couldn’t play OGG in most apps, many car stereos and smart TVs ignore it, and plenty of editing tools, e-learning platforms and upload forms accept only MP3. A classic example is a WhatsApp voice note saved to your computer as an .ogg or .opus file: it won’t open in many media players, and you can’t attach it to most forms. Converting it to MP3 makes it universally playable.
Converting voice notes and Opus audio
Voice notes are usually encoded with Opus at very low bitrates — often 16 to 32 kbps — because Opus is extraordinarily efficient for speech. MP3 is much less efficient at those rates, so it needs more bits to sound equivalent. We recommend 128 kbps for voice notes: it is still small (under 1 MB per minute) and sounds just like the original. To export a WhatsApp voice note, open the chat, long-press the note, choose Share or Forward › Share, and save it to your files; then convert it here.
Quality tips for Vorbis music
Vorbis music files are usually encoded at quality levels that average 112–320 kbps. As with any lossy-to-lossy conversion, choose an MP3 bitrate at or above the source: 192 kbps for typical Vorbis files and 320 kbps for high-quality ones. If you have the original lossless audio, convert from FLAC or WAV instead for the best possible MP3. Our guide to common audio formats compares Vorbis, Opus, AAC and MP3 side by side.
OGG vs MP3 at a glance
| OGG (Vorbis / Opus) | MP3 | |
|---|---|---|
| Licence | Open and royalty-free | Free since patents expired in 2017 |
| Efficiency | Higher — Opus is excellent below 64 kbps | Lower — needs more bits for the same quality |
| Typical use | Voice notes, games, browsers, Android | Music libraries, cars, sharing, uploads |
| Device support | Good on modern software, patchy on hardware | Practically universal |
In short: keep OGG if all your devices play it, and convert to MP3 when you need a file that simply works for everyone.
Browser support and privacy
Chrome, Edge, Firefox and recent Safari versions decode Vorbis and Opus natively, so conversion starts instantly. If a particular file can’t be decoded by your browser, the converter automatically loads ffmpeg.wasm, which supports every OGG variant. Either way, your audio stays on your device and is never uploaded — important for private voice messages. Need other formats? Try M4A to MP3, MP4 to MP3 or AAC to MP3.
Frequently asked questions
Can I convert WhatsApp voice notes to MP3?
Yes. Save the .ogg or .opus voice note to your device and convert it here at 128 kbps.
Is OGG better than MP3?
Vorbis and especially Opus are more efficient than MP3, sounding better at the same bitrate. MP3’s advantage is that it plays everywhere.
Does it support .opus files?
Yes. .opus, .ogg and .oga files are all supported.
Why is my MP3 bigger than the OGG?
Opus and Vorbis are very efficient, so MP3 needs a higher bitrate to sound the same. This is normal.
Is the converter free and private?
Yes. It is free with no limits, and files are converted in your browser without being uploaded.
